The Survive & Thrive Newsletter: Finding Your Release Valve

Welcome to The Survive & Thrive Support for Summer Newsletter.

For many of us, the summer holidays can bring a lot of intense feelings and  not all of them are calm, neat, or joyful!

When the daily pressure of caregiving builds up, it is incredibly easy for deep frustration or sometimes anger to take root inside.

When we are completely overwhelmed, that heavy energy can move to sit in our bodies and minds where it can turn into bitterness, resentment, or absolute exhaustion. But anger and frustration are simply energy needing a way out. We must not let them eat away at us from the inside and luckily we can prevent this by moving the feelings out.

You can write them.

You can paint them.

You can dance them.

You can talk them.

You can vigorously sweat them out.

The goal is simply to do something with them.

You don’t have to be an 'artist' to have a creative outlet. True creativity isn't about producing a masterpiece, it is simply a practical way to let your heaviest feelings go somewhere else besides staying trapped inside your own head.

This week, we invite you to focus on opening up that release valve.

This Week’s Journal Prompts

  • What does moving my feelings look like?

    • If you had to channel a stressful, high-trigger morning into a physical action, what would feel most natural to you? (e.g., blasting a heavy song in the car, furiously scribbling on a scrap piece of paper, or vigorously weeding the garden).

    • How can you use that action the next time the pressure builds?

  • Where is my hidden release valve?

    • When was the last time you did something purely for the sake of doing it, rather than to achieve a specific result or fulfill a chore? (e.g., colouring in alongside the kids, baking something simple, or putting on a playlist that matches your exact mood).

  • What am I holding onto that needs to be released right now?

    • Write down the single biggest frustration or disappointment you experienced this week. Once it is on the page, look at it and decide exactly how you are going to write it out, talk it out, or move it out of your system.

Take a deep breath today. You are doing an incredible job navigating it all.

Connect with us this week:
