The Survive & Thrive Newsletter: Protecting Your Whimsy

Welcome to The Survive & Thrive Support for Summer Newsletter.

When you are navigating the complex, often exhausting world of supporting a child with additional needs, you may feel that you've been forced to grow a thick skin. The world seems to need you to be a fierce advocate, highly organised, and permanently realistic.

But living in that state of constant hyper-vigilance can harden us over time. It leaves very little room for us outside of our caregiving role.

One of the loveliest things we've come across recently for your mental health right now is thinking about how to protect your whimsy. Not your productivity, not your image, but your whimsy - the soft belief that life can still surprise you.

It takes immense strength to still believe in good things after you’ve seen how challenging, exhausting, and cruel the world and its systems can be.

Staying hopeful is its own quiet rebellion.

"Whimsy" might feel like a luxury you don’t have time for right now.

But it isn't about ignoring reality or living in denial.

It’s about keeping a tiny corner of your mind fiercely reserved for joy, childlike wonder, and the belief that beautiful, surprising things can still happen for you, independent of your circumstances.

It’s buying yourself a random bunch of flowers just because, pausing to look at a rainbow, letting your mind daydream without a to-do list, or romanticising a quiet five minutes with a hot coffee. It’s a gentle, beautiful defiance against the exhaustion.

This Week’s Journal Prompts

  • What did "whimsy" look like for me before life got so heavy?

    • Think back to a younger version of yourself. What did you used to find enchanting or fun? (e.g., a specific genre of fiction, stargazing, a certain type of music, or a creative hobby).

    • How can you bring a tiny sliver of that back into your environment this week?

  • Where can I choose "wonder" over "worry" today?

    • Just for a few minutes, if you could completely put down your realistic, practical mindset, what is something small around you right now that feels beautiful, comforting, or lucky?

  • What is one small way I can "water my sparkle" this week?

    • What is a tiny, joyful thing you can do purely because it makes you smile, even if it is completely unproductive, impractical, or silly?

Remember, staying hopeful and holding onto your inner sparkle isn't a distraction, it is how you can survive and even to thrive.

Welcome to The Survive & Thrive Support for Summer Newsletter.   Many of us find that when it comes to parenting, it can feel like you are under constant surveillance. You try so har...
